Join local scientist Joyce Guzik at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 in the Los Alamos Nature Center’s planetarium to explore the discoveries of the NASA Kepler Mission.
The spacecraft was officially retired in October 2018, and Guzik will highlight a few of the many discoveries of the mission and preview first results from the follow-up TESS spacecraft, which launched in April 2018.
The Kepler Mission launched in March 2009 and discovered 2,682 planets around other stars, revealing new variable stars and providing data for researchers to infer the size, mass, age and interior structure of stars, a field known as “asteroseismology.”
Guzik is a research scientist and Laboratory Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She received her Ph.D. is Astrophysics from Iowa State University and has been investigating the interior structure and evolution of the Sun and other stars since 1986.
In addition to this talk, the nature center will show the full-dome film “Black Holes” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. in the planetarium. This film brings to life all that is fascinating and extreme in the world of black holes and presents the latest scientific information. Audience members will voyage through galaxies in search of answers to explain these riddles of nature in this film.
