UNITED CHURCH News:
Whoever thought that donating something to or buying something from a thrift store had such a grand reach?
The volunteers at the United Church of Los Alamos thrift store want you to know just how far that reach goes and just how long they have been preparing for a festive event 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 5.
Jean Picard has not only been a member of the United Church since 1981, but active in the women’s programs including the Women’s Christian Service Society and children’s programming. Those groups previously held holiday bazaars, but this year Picard is chair of the “Everything Christmas Sale”.
The idea came about as the ladies discussed their excess of Christmas and holiday decorations. The volunteers began to collect gently used Christmas decorations, lights, trees, jewelry and holiday items for the sale. That sale is the first Wednesday in December, when the hard work pays off at The United Church. The doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the sale remains in progress until 12:30 p.m.
“All proceeds are combined with proceeds from the United Church Thrift Shop to benefit Missions and nonprofits in Northern New Mexico,” Picard said. “We support 25 organizations in Northern New Mexico on a regular basis and another three to seven as needed or by special request.”
Their primary aim is to help women and children, but they also support men, the elderly or those with special needs.
