Española Humane Temporarily Closes Shelter To Public

COMMUNITY News:

ESPAÑOLA — Española Humane announced Nov. 19 that combined roof replacement and mold remediation work has significantly reduced the shelter’s operating capacity, prompting a temporary closure to the public and a suspension of most animal intakes.

The shelter is now closed to the public, with an anticipated reopening on Dec. 9. Intake services will remain suspended until Dec. 15, except for urgent public-safety cases. Adoptions will continue digitally, with all meet-and-greet requests handled via email at contact@espanolahumane.org.

“These construction projects are essential for the long-term safety and well-being of the animals in our care,” said Kate Baldwin, the shelter’s executive director. “We’re grateful for the community’s understanding as we navigate these temporary but necessary disruptions.”

Two Major Facility Improvements Underway

Española Humane is currently completing two overlapping projects:

  • Mold remediation inside dog kennels and puppy pens
  • A full roof replacement over the lobby, kennels, cat adoptions, offices, shelter clinic, and staff breakroom

Impact on Services

  • Shelter closed to public through Dec. 9 (subject to change)
  • Public intakes suspended until Dec. 15, except for urgent public-safety cases
  • Adoptions and meet-and-greets conducted via email: contact@espanolahumane.org
  • Spay/Neuter & Vaccination Clinics Remain Open:
    • The separate Española Humane Clinic continues to operate for free spay/neuter surgeries and public vaccination services.

Please note: the clinic parking lot is closed during construction, but parking is available nearby.

What to do if you’ve found a stray animal in Española or Rio Arriba County?

  • Within Española City limits, call Española Animal Control: 505.753.4630
  • Outside the city limits, call Rio Arriba County Animal Control: 505.753.3329

Impact on Animals

Dogs and puppies already in care have been relocated to remaining usable spaces or trusted boarding partners.

  • Canine intake remains limited due to reduced kennel capacity.
  • Cats remain in care, though adoption areas have shifted due to construction.
  • Support Needed: Adopt, Foster or Donate

Fostering and adopting remain critical during construction. Community members can help reduce pressure on limited kennel space by fostering even briefly. All supplies and veterinary care are provided.

Off-site adoption events will continue at PetSmart Santa Fe:

  • Nov. 22-23;
  • Nov. 29-30; and
  • Including a special Black Friday Adoption Event 12-3 p.m. Nov. 28.

Donations to help offset costs during roof repairs and mold remediation are sincerely appreciated and will be matched through November. To donate, visit espanolahumane.org.
