PEEC News:

The Pajarito Environmental Center (PEEC) will hold its annual meeting of members Oct. 20, but this will be a far cry from a formal membership meeting.

Dubbed “PEECnic,” the event will feature a dessert buffet, prizes, activities and much more and is not limited to PEEC members. Everyone is invited and it’s free!

PEECnic 2013 is 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20 at the PEEC Nature Center, 3540 Orange St., in Los Alamos. The activities and prize drawings will run throughout the event, so those interested in attending are welcome to drop by at any time.

PEEC board members will be concocting a delicious array of desserts, including options that are gluten-free and vegan. There will also be special offers for those who sign up for PEEC membership at the event.

“We are really trying to outdo ourselves this year,” PEEC Executive Director Katie Watson said. “We want to it be a fun event that people of all ages will enjoy and what’s not to love about a dessert buffet?”

There will be a booth set up where community members can learn how to certify their backyards as wildlife habitats, activities and crafts for kids, prizes and giveaways, she said.

“We’ve recently restocked our gift shop with all kinds of neat nature-themed items, so people can also get a jump-start on their holiday shopping if they wish,” Watson said.

PEECnic will also serve as the annual meeting for PEEC, and members will have the chance to vote for the new board members. In addition, everyone will have the chance to see and comment on the conceptual designs for the exhibits that will outfit the new Los Alamos County Nature Center, slated to open in spring 2015 and run by PEEC.
