ESPAÑOLA — Northern New Mexico College’s (NNMC) Math & Physical Sciences Department is partnering with the Universities Space Research Association’s (USRA) Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) to host Sky Fest, a free community astronomy event, from 5–9 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at NNMC’s Nick Salazar Center for the Arts. The community is invited to this free event, which will include hands-on activities and viewings through telescopes (weather dependent).
The evening’s immersive experiences include guided tours through space in Northern’s new planetarium. The event also features a screening of NASA’s documentary, “Cosmic Dawn,” which tells the true story of the James Webb Space Telescope. Following the presentation, experts who will provide insights and answer questions.
“This event is a great way to learn about the universe beyond our planet,” said Heather Pierce, STEM Holistic Advisor for the Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. “The planetarium in particular allows us to transport to places that are impossible with traditional means.”
Sky Fest is a collaborative effort between the LPI, NNMC, Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
