  • Replace your American flag if it is faded or tattered beyond repair, or dirty beyond cleaning.

Rivera Funeral Home in Los Alamos is offering a safe bin for community members to drop off flags that have been replaced for proper disposal. The flags will touch the bottom of the bin, never the floor. The bin will be placed outside on warm days and taken in at night, otherwise it can be found inside the double doors between Rivera’s and HR Block. Simply drop your flag off and replace it with a new one.

All are welcome (Residents, County, Fire, Police.) to drop any used US or NM flags in the bin, where they will be folded and transported for disposal.

Scout Troops that want an opportunity to participate in flag disposal are encouraged to reach out to the Los Alamos Rivera mortuary manager, Amber Edkin, for a chance to participate.

The bin also includes information pamphlets on Veteran’s benefits for the public, and information regarding flag flying etiquette. Military members and immediate family may receive a discount on pre-arranged funeral plans, and appointment may be made to answer questions about military burials/cremation as well.

The American flag has stood as a symbol of freedom and justice for over 225 years. Through wars and in times of peace, the sight of the American flag has given notice to foes and assurances to friends that democracy lives. No other symbol captures the power and glory of our nation like the American flag.

Remember, Tuesday June 4, 2024, is a local election day. We have the freedom of choice, and our county makes this easy and safe.
