In the June 10 District 117 Sectional Tournament at Clubs (STaC), Jerry Morzinsku and Joy Green were 1st in Flight A, Mary Courtright and Ann-Marie Graves were 2nd in A, Norm Worth and Bobby Haynes were 3rd in Aand 1st in Flight B, and Steve Kemic and Jennifer Young were 4th in A,

On this hand, it is important for South to realize what a powerful offensive hand he/she has! Can getting to game be high enough?

This is Board #12 from our June 10 game. West was the dealer, and N/S were vulnerable.

After 3 passes, South should open with a strong 2♣ bid. Assuming E/W pass throughout, North has a conventional 2 bid, which is basically a waiting bid to see how the auction develops. South has a natural 3 call, showing a diamond suit. Some North’s might then bid 3NT, but a raise in diamonds is more constructive. However, if North bids 3NT, but South should correct to 4, North will then raise to game, and South should try for the diamond slam. 6 is cold, and 7 is makeable if either declarer can find the Q or if West leads the A♣ as the opening lead. When this hand was played locally, one pair played in 3NT/South making 5, and three other pairs played in 5/N making 6.
