Duplicate Bridge In Los Alamos: Jan. 21, 2026

BRIDGE News:

Several of our players performed well in the recent Albuquerque Regional tournament.

Top masterpoint winners were: Sam Borkowsky – 12.08, Beth Schaefer – 10.17, Jack  Stafurik – 8.60, Martin Cooper – 8.04, Neill Goltz – 7.04, Randy Baker – 6.76, Helen Butler – 5.64, Gina Doorn – 3.85, Bev Cooper – 2.89, Bobby Haynes – 1.40, Harry Dewey – 0.88 and Linda Lambert 0.88.

Jerry Morzinski and Sig Lodwig won both the Monday and Wednesday open games here. East/West must be very careful during the auction. East has a good hand in high cards, and West has a distributional monster!  But N/S have a great trump fit, and more than half the available high card points (HCP). This should generate a wild auction!

Board 14:  East is the dealer and neither side is vulnerable.

East should open the bidding with 1.  South has a sound preemptive 2 call.  At this point, West should probably pass, expecting to participate later in the auction.  North has a lot to suggest a raise to 4.  Assuming East and South then pass, what would you do as West?

A sacrifice is very tempting, and many Wests might well bid 4♠.  North should double this for penalty, and when East and South pass, West may decide to try 5♣.  This turns out to be an unfortunate decision, as both 4♠ and 5♣ will be set, but it turns out tht N/S can’t make 4, either (with good defense)!

When this hand was played locally, one pair played in 5♠/W doubled down 5 (ouch!), a second pair played in 3/N making 4, a third pair played in 4/N down 1, and the 4th pair played in 3NT/E down 3.

The Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club games are held at the Betty Ehart Senior Activity Center (BESAC) starting at 12:45 p.m., Wednesdays, and at the White Rock Senior Activity Center (WRSAC) at 12: 45 p.m., Mondays.

Perhaps you’ve seen the old card game “Bridge“ mentioned in a book or seen it being played on the Orient Express in an old Agatha Christie black-and-white movie. Maybe you’ve even tried to play it in the remote past with Mom and Dad (or even more likely Grandma and Grandpa) around the kitchen table. Well, it hasn’t quite gone the way of the typewriter or film cameras, yet – and, in fact, it has a substantial Free-on-the-Internet presence. LEARN TO PLAY BRIDGE!

That being said, it is a game that needs new and younger Face-to-Face players and, here in Los Alamos the local club is ready to bring you on board with nighttime, after work or weekend, FREE lessons, and playing opportunities.

We have four locations available—the game store in White Rock, the Mesa game store on Central here in Los Alamos, the Los Alamos Public Library, or Smith’s Market! What we need from interested folks is some indication of interest and what day of the week and location would be most convenient. Please reach out to Neill Goltz at 641.236.1170 (neill.goltz2@gmail.com) or Bobby Haynes at 505.753.3249 (rsh@valornet.com) with your questions and preferred time and location!
