Duplicate Bridge In Los Alamos: Feb. 23, 2026

BRIDGE News:

There were several rank changes reported to us this month by ACBL. Alan Wadlinger is now a Sectional Master, having earned over 50 masterpoints.  Randy Baker is now a Regional Master with over 150 points. Gina Doorn and Helen Butler are new Advanced NABC Masters, with well over 200 points, and Martin Cooper is now a Bronze Live Master, having earned over 500 points.

Martin Cooper and Jerry Fleming were Monday winners in flight A. Laurie and Bob Walker were high in Flight B. On Wednesday, Steve Kemic and Jennifer Young were 1st in Flight A, while Bev Cooper and Neill Goltz were high in Flight B.

There are several ways to reach an easy slam on the following hand. Depending on the quality of the field, several players should get there.

Board 18 from the Feb. 23 game:  East is the dealer and N/S are vulnerable.

After East passes, South should open 1♣. West will pass, and North should bid 1♠. Don’t think about jumping to show this great hand! 1♠ spade is forcing for at least one round, and shows at least a 4-card suit. North is now in a good position to inquire for slam by bidding 4NT Blackwood to ask for aces. When South shows one Ace, and then subsequently shows two Kings in response to a 5NT Blackwood ask, slam is virtually assured.

When this hand was played locally, one pair played in 7♠/N making 7, and 4 pairs played in 6♠/N making 7. Well done!

The Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club games are held at the Betty Ehart Senior Activity Center (BESAC) starting at 12:45 p.m., Wednesdays, and at the White Rock Senior Activity Center (WRSAC) at 12:45 p.m., Mondays.

Hello, fellow “game enthusiast.“  Are you interested in a game that will test both your mental acuity and your communication skills as you and a partner enter the field of intellectual combat? Then perhaps  you’ve seen the historical card game “Bridge“ mentioned in a book or seen it being played in an old black-and-white movie on the Orient Express or by Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard.”  Bridge is not a game of the past, though, but is still played worldwide and by millions of Americans at least once a week, in venues ranging from competitive in-person tournaments with hundreds of players to casual play at home or on the internet.

Here in Los Alamos and White Rock, our local club is ready to bring you on board with nighttime, after work or weekend FREE lessons and playing opportunities with other newcomers, resumers and beginners.

We had an extremely successful kick-off this past 2/14 and will continue to meet regularly on Saturday mornings from 10 am–12 p.m. at the Mesa Top game store (next to Boomerang) on Central here in Los Alamos.
