BRIDGE News:
The Feb. 4 team game was a great success. There were 7 teams in play, including two teams from Santa Fe. Local players Sig Lodwig, Jerry Morzinski, Jerry Fleming and Cliff Rudy were the overall winners.
The two games on Feb. 9 and 11 are Sectional Tournament at Clubs (STaC) games. Martin Cooper and Jerry Fleming were overall winners on Feb. 2. Bob and Laurie Walker were high in flight B.
Here’s another competitive hand. Both sides should get into the auction. When the high cards are reasonably evenly divided between the two pairs, it makes for in interesting challenge!
Board 10 from the Feb. 2 game: East is the dealer and both sides are vulnerable.
After East and South pass, West has a natural 1♦ opening. North should overcall 1♠, after which East should probably make a limit raise to 3♦. The auction will likely end there, though a feisty North might try 3♠. If N/S are allowed to play it there, they can play to go down only one trick unless their opponents lead two trumps before declarer can trump a diamond. In any event, if they are doubled, they will earn a bad score. E/W should make 3-4 diamonds if allowed to play the hand.
When this hand was played locally, two pairs played in 3♦/E making 4, one pair played in 3♦/E making 3, one pair played in 3♠/N down 1, and the 5th pair played in4♠/N down 3.
The Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club games are held at the Betty Ehart Senior Activity Center (BESAC) starting at 12:45 p.m., Wednesdays, and at the White Rock Senior Activity Center (WRSAC) at 12:45 p.m., Mondays.

Perhaps you’ve seen the old card game “Bridge“ mentioned in a book or seen it being played on the Orient Express in an old Agatha Christie black-and-white movie. Maybe you’ve even tried to play it in the remote past with Mom and Dad (or even more likely Grandma and Grandpa) around the kitchen table. Well, it hasn’t quite gone the way of the typewriter or film cameras, yet – and, in fact, it has a substantial Free-on-the-Internet presence. LEARN TO PLAY BRIDGE!
That being said, it is a game that needs new and younger Face-to-Face players and, here in Los Alamos the local club is ready to bring you on board with nighttime, after work or weekend, FREE lessons, and playing opportunities.
We have four locations available – the game store in White Rock, the Mesa game store on Central here in Los Alamos, the Los Alamos Public Library, or Smith’s Market! What we need from interested folks is some indication of interest and what day of the week and location would be most convenient.
