Dukes Up Presents: The Debate Games To Feature Gubernatorial Candidates Sam Bregman & Deb Haaland

NMPBS News:

The charitable organization Dukes Up will present The Debate Games featuring Sam Bregman and Deb Haaland, a gubernatorial Democratic primary debate, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, on NMPBS Ch. 5.1, and 9 p.m. on Friday, May 8, on Ch 5.4. The program will also stream free on the PBS app and NMPBS YouTube channel at the time of initial broadcast.

To be filmed 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at CNM’s Smith Brasher Auditorium in Albuquerque, the event will feature New Mexico’s Democratic candidates for governor, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, in a community-driven, interactive debate format. Gwyneth Doland, Associate Chair for Journalism at the UNM School of Communication & Journalism, and New Mexico in Focus Politics Correspondent, will serve as moderator.

Topics: Dukes Up is gathering questions from New Mexico organizations working to protect democracy and liberty. The groups include: the ACLU of New Mexico, Albuquerque Indivisible, the Center for Biological Diversity, District 1119NM Hospital Workers Union, Jewish Voice for Peace, the NAACP-ABQ, New Mexico Trial Lawyers, Transform Education NM, Tribal Education Alliance, and Youth United 4 Climate Crisis Action (YUCCA).

Format: Dukes Up will vet the questions to ensure they are clear, fair, non-repetitive, and focus on a governor’s job duties.  At the debate, there will be a system for incentivizing responsive answers to questions, rather than evasive ones, through crowd participation. Time limitations will be enforced. The focus is transparency.

Several groups are involved in the coordination of this event. Dukes Up is organizing and presenting the debate, handling all editorial content.
