Dr. José Delfin Selected Unanimously For New Superintendent Of Los Alamos Public Schools

In a school board meeting Saturday, Jan. 15, the Los Alamos School Board unanimously voted to hire Dr. José Delfin as the next superintendent for the district.

“On behalf of the LAPS Board, I welcome Dr. Delfin to the district. We look forward to working together,” School Board President Melanie Colgan said.

“I am excited to have Dr. Delfin join LAPS,” Interim Superintendent Jennifer Guy said. “He brings a fresh perspective and great leadership experience to our district. I am looking forward to working with him.”  

Last week Dr. Delfin went through a full day of interviews with School Board members, administrators, teachers, support staff, students, parents and community members.

Dr. Delfin is an experienced educational leader, who for the past 20 years, has served at the school site level as well as the district level. He serves as the associate superintendent for the Carson City School District where he leads the Human Resources, Risk Management and Transportation departments, and has supervised principals and support staff. He also is the lead negotiator and has fostered solid professional relationships and trust with union leaders.

Prior to school administration, Dr. Delfin taught art, computer graphics and web-design. Many of his students uncovered their talents and are now working in various visual media fields. He has always remained a student-centered educator from the beginning of his career to the present.

Dr. Delfin grew up in the diversely populated Washington, D.C. area. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, his master’s degree from the University of Las Vegas, Nevada (UNLV), and his Educational Doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Las Vegas, Nev. Dr. Delfin holds an adjunct faculty position in UNLV’s principal preparation master’s program.

In his free time, Dr. Delfin enjoys tinkering with cars, photography and keeping fit. Most of all he enjoys spending time with his two adult children.

Dr. Delfin will begin transitioning into the role over the next few weeks and will be working in the district before the end of this school year.
