DOE Secretary Hosts Schlesinger Medal Ceremony And Energy Security Symposium Wednesday

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz

DOE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will kick off Energy Action Month Wednesday, Oct. 1 and mark the 37th anniversary of the Department’s formal opening by hosting the first Schlesinger Medal Ceremony and Symposium on Energy Security.

The Secretary will make keynote remarks and present a new medal to an individual whose contributions have advanced our understanding of threats, opportunities, and policy choices impacting the energy security interests of the United States. Following the medal ceremony, two distinguished panels will discuss America’s energy security from the Department’s founding to the present, and looking to the future.

The creation of the Schlesinger medal is inspired by the late James R. Schlesinger, the first U.S. Secretary of Energy, whose career and works embody a focus on the interplay of economic, security and energy issues – in academia, in public service and industry.

This medal will be presented annually to individuals outside the Department of Energy, thereby complementing the existing Schlesinger Award presented for outstanding performance of a DOE employee in advancing contributions of national importance.

The events will be livestreamed, beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST at https:////energy.gov/live.
