PEEC News:

Take a leisurely stroll with the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and plant expert Craig Martin to explore the subtle beauty of Northern New Mexico’s shrubs and trees in their autumn and early winter forms. The Shrub and Tree ID Walk is 1-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15. Admission is free, and participants of all ages and experience levels are welcome.

Even without spring leaves or summer flowers, native plants offer a wealth of clues to their identities; bark texture, branching patterns, and lingering leaves provide a window into their natural story. The walk will occur on a nearby trail chosen by the leader based on current plant visibility and trail conditions. Participants will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center (2600 Canyon Road) and caravan together to the trailhead.

Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring closed-toed shoes, water, hats, gloves, and any other seasonal necessities.

About the Presenter:

Craig Martin has lived in Los Alamos since 1987 and has spent decades exploring and documenting the plants of the Southwest. An accomplished writer and naturalist, Martin has authored more than 300 publications, including Los Alamos Trails, 100 Hikes in New Mexico, and Plants of the Jemez Mountains. He served as Open Space and Trails Specialist in Los Alamos for 12 years and has contributed over 12,000 plant observations to iNaturalist across 45 states.
