Deputy Injured In Crash With Suspected Drunk Driver

ESPANOLA – At around 7 p.m. Thursday, the New Mexico State Police investigated a crash involving a Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office (RASO) deputy on U.S. Highway 84 near milepost 204.

The initial investigation indicated that a deputy with RASO was traveling north on U.S. 84 around the mile post 204 north of Espanola. A Nissan sedan driven by Laverne Mondragon, 42, of Espanola failed to yield to oncoming traffic and pulled out in front of the deputy as she turned from a private driveway onto U.S. 84. The deputy took evasive action to avoid the crash and the vehicles collided.

The RASO deputy sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to an area hospital. Mondragon was not injured in the crash. 

The crash investigation and subsequent DWI investigation resulted in Mondragon being arrested for DWI resulting in Great Bodily Harm. Mondragon was booked into the Rio Arriba County Detention Center and charged with:


  • DWI resulting in Great bodily harm by vehicle (3rd degree felony);
  • Careless driving; and
  • Failure to stop before entering a highway.

 This crash is still under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. No additional information is currently available.
