At the Kiwanis of Los Alamos Oct. 14 meeting, County Deputy Fire Chief Wendy Servey gave a presentation on the Fire Station 4 relocation project.

The project is in the conceptual design phase with community and neighborhood meetings in the works and a projected site selection planned in November.

The three sites considered are next to the existing station, on the golf course maintenance area near the roundabout, and on land available in Loma Linda.

Servey, who came to Los Alamos in 2006. Explained the need for a relocated and improved facility that will replace the more than 50-year-old station that has been dealing with costly maintenance needs and outdated design affecting the physical and mental well-being of firefighters living and working there as well as impacting the station’s overall effectiveness.

Servey explained that there are three major goals of the new design:

  • Firefighter Health and Quality of Life – Physical health by managing contaminate exposure, providing quality rest, and improved fitness; Mental health with places to de-stress, commune, be outdoors and have quiet; and Recruitment and retention with gender neutral design and a comfortable space.
  • Improved Functionality – Increased capacity for equipment, shorter turnout times, and top shelf alerting and technology.
  • Improved Sustainability – This will be a LEED Silver certified facility.
