ALBUQUERQUE – Today, the Democratic Party of New Mexico (DPNM) announced the establishment of a local chapter in Sierra County. The Democratic Party of Sierra County was reestablished after a several-year absence and will be led by Chair Joe Heidrick and Vice Chair Danny Diaz.

Sierra County is not the only place where DPNM is establishing a new Democratic Party chapter. When DPNM Chair Sara Attleson came into the position in late April of this year, one of her top priorities was to establish county parties in those that did not have one. DPNM has established or made progress on establishing county parties in all 6 out of the 33 New Mexican counties that had no local party in place last year.

“Having a strong Democratic Party presence in every county is crucial to our success. One of the things I ran on when running for DPNM Chair was having a local Democratic Party chapter in every single county, because every voter in every community, rural or urban, counts,” DPNM Chair Sara Attleson said.

DPNM established local chapters in Catron County in March and De Baca County in July. Work is in progress to establish chapters in the three other counties that did not have a local Democratic Party chapter at the start of the year: Harding, Guadalupe, and Hidalgo.

County parties play a crucial role in DPNM’s voter outreach and engagement efforts. DPNM relies on them to organize volunteer operations and political events at the local level. Per DPNM Rules, county parties also play a crucial role in the pre-primary convention process, an event required by New Mexico statute that is important in primary ballot qualification and order.
