DPNM News:

ALBUQUERQUE — Shortly after receiving a notice of withdrawal from the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office today, Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Sara Attleson sent the official Call to the State Central Committee (SCC) Meeting to fill the Lieutenant Governor vacancy.

The State Central Committee meeting will be held July 25 and will be conducted virtually over ZOOM, to ensure accessibility for State Central Committee members across New Mexico. Voting will be conducted by online absentee ballot after the meeting.

Roughly 500 SCC members will be able to vote in the election. The majority of the SCC members are elected at the county level by other local Democrats. Per state statute, an election to nominate a Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor after the primary election will take place through the State Central Committee as dictated by DPNM rules.

According to 2025 New Mexico Statute 1-8-8, if after a primary election, but ninety or more days before the general election, a vacancy occurs, for any cause, in the list of the nominees of a qualified political party for any public office to be filled in the general election, the central committee of the state political party of the nominee fills the vacancy.
