LAPS News:

After an extensive national search, Superintendent Gene Schmidt has announced that Dr. Deborah (Debbie) Belew-Nyquist of Silverdale, Wash., has accepted the principal position at Los Alamos High School.

Dr. Belew-Nyquist brings 24 years of educational experience and leadership in schools. Most recently she served as an educational consultant with International Schools/Children of the Nations, which prepares children of developing countries to become leaders of their nations.

Belew-Nyquist previously served as an assistant principal at Central Kitsap High School in Washington State. One of her many responsibilities was the development of a peer crisis intervention program that received national recognition. She was also tasked with expanding the Advanced Placement, Honors, and Distinguished Scholars programs, which received national recognition as well.

Belew-Nyquist comes to Los Alamos as a respected educator with a reputation for building strong relationships with students, staff, parents, and community.  She has two sons, one working for the Peace Corps in Paraguay and one pursuing doctoral studies in California.

“I am excited to join Los Alamos Public Schools and look forward to working together to continue the strong tradition of excellence,” Belew-Nyquist said.

“Those involved in the candidate screening and principal interview process shared high words of praise for Dr. Belew-Nyquist,” Schmidt said. “During my one-on-one interview, I perceived a strong research-based educator who brings a student-centered focus to learning.  It is my belief that as the next Hilltopper administrator, Dr. Belew-Nyquist will continue to build on the educational excellence of the school and serve effectively with vision, compassion and professionalism.”

Belew-Nyquist will make her first official visit to the high school at a “meet and greet” with parents and community members Monday, April 14. She will visit Los Alamos High School on April 15 and 16 to meet with staff and students. On the evening of April 15, Belew-Nyquist will be introduced at the Los Alamos School Board Meeting.

“Please join with me in welcoming our new high school principal,” Schmidt said.
