Daily Postcard: View Toward Valle Grande & Cabin District

Daily Postcard: The view looking toward Valle Grande and the Cabin District from part of the trail and roadway to be improved starting today. Heavy equipment crews will be improving a ~1.5-mile section of legacy roadway (formerly known as VC02) between the Ranger Station and the South Mountain/Redondo Foothills intersection. The project is expected to last approximately 3 weeks. To ensure visitor safety and project efficiency during this time, the roadway will be closed to all public use including hiking, cycling and motorized vehicle use. This will temporarily impact trail access to South Mountain, Redondo Foothills and El Cajete from the Cabin District. Dispersed, off-trail pedestrian travel is permitted at Valles Caldera National Preserve, so hikers who wish to access the areas impacted by this temporary closure may still do so while avoiding the project area. The purpose of this improvement project is to prepare for the construction of a new trailhead parking lot at the intersection of the South Mountain, Redondo Foothills and El Cajete Trails in the spring of 2025. Once the new parking lot is complete, the roadway will be opened to public vehicular access. These improvements are part of Valles Caldera’s Front-country Infrastructure Improvements Project.
