Daily Postcard: Hawk Soars Above Valles Caldera

Daily Postcard: A Swainson’s hawk soars across a blue sky Wednesday at Valles Caldera National Preserve. Spring has sprung at Valles Caldera and it’s right in the middle of bird migration. Birds are making their way back north from their winter grounds in the southern United States and Mexico, Central America and South America. During the fall, migratory birds head south for warmer temperatures and more secure food availability, and in the spring, they come back north to breed and raise their young. Valles Caldera is in the Central Flyway of North America, so expect to see certain species of birds migrating through the region such as Swainson’s hawk, white-winged dove, barn swallow and many more. With abundant food, water, space and shelter, Valles Caldera makes a great flyover spot for birds during migration and for those that live here seasonally or year-round. To track and follow the journey of a specific bird, check out The Audubon Society’s Bird Migration Explorer at https://explorer.audubon.org/home. The explorer is a web app with which to follow various bird species as they migrate across the Americas. Photo by Kent Miller/NPS
