Daily Postcard: An Abert’s Squirrel is spotted hanging upside down in a tree while eating Saturday at Bandelier National Monument. Abert’s Squirrels are a favorite that many park visitors see when hiking the Main Pueblo Loop Trail. A typical gray tree squirrel, Abert’s are unique due to their oversized ears with long fur tassels. Abert’s squirrels are active year-round and unlike most squirrels do not cache food. They are excellent tree climbers and can be seen performing incredible acrobatics when jumping from tree top to tree top. Ponderosa pine trees provide this squirrel’s essential food, including the seeds, buds and inner bark of the tips of branches. Mushrooms are another favorite food for Abert’s. Courtesy/BNM
