Daily Postcard: Sharp-Shinned Hawk At Overlook Park

Daily Postcard: This Sharp-shinned Hawk posed on a fence recently at Overlook Park in White Rock. It can be challenging to tell the difference between a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Cooper’s Hawk, but the prevailing view of the ‘authoritative sources’ is that this is a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Adults have red eyes and the yellow eyes on this hawk suggest it is a juvenile. According to All About Birds, Sharp-shinned Hawks are the smallest hawks in Canada and the US. Interestingly, females are generally about one-third larger than males, which is typical for hawks and owls but otherwise not common among birds. Photo by Richard Skolnik
