Daily Postcard: A rare Wilson’s Snipe showed up this week at Overlook Park in White Rock. Wilson’s Snipe spend summers from Colorado to the Arctic Circle, then winter from Bosque del Apache NWR all the way south to Ecuador. But this week, several birders in Los Alamos and from across northern New Mexico enjoyed four of those migrants at the ball fields in Overlook Park. Foraging by driving their long beaks into moist ground like the needle on a sewing machine, these birds prefer marshes rather than the alpine forests and dry canyons of the Jemez. The birds seemed to have been attracted to the puddles from the irrigation system in the outfield at Overlook Sports Complex, making a refueling stop as they flew along the Rio Grande on their way south for the winter. See birds and learn more about birding by joining the informal birding group for all ages in the Observation Lounge at PEEC Nature Center at 10 a.m. each Wednesday morning. Learn how birding benefits your physical, mental, and spiritual health at the free presentation by Holly Merker, author of the book Ornitherapy, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at Betty Ehart Senior Activity Center. Local wildlife photographer Jonathan Dowell, Ph.D. took this photo of the Snipe at Overlook Park. See more of his photos on Instagram @SnowyEgretPhotography.
