Daily Postcard: American Kestrel Spotted In Pueblo Canyon

Daily Postcard: Being in the right place at the right time and being prepared are cornerstones of wildlife photography. Jonathan and Tessa Dowell of Los Alamos were enjoying the sunset view across Pueblo Canyon this week when they heard a couple of Say’s Phoebes calling from a juniper tree below. Jonathan swung his spotting scope around to try to get a look, but the first bird in the viewfinder was definitely not a Say’s Phoebe. He shared the view with Tessa, then pushed the camera adapter onto the scope and caught this picture. American Kestrels are found across much of New Mexico throughout the year. During summer, insects form an important part of their diet. For more of Dowell’s photos, follow him on Instagram at SnowyEgretPhotography. Photo by Jonathan Dowell
