This weekend, local non-profit Champions of Youth Ambitions (C’YA) will do its monthly community give back to help out a lovely dog in need of a new home.
Local volunteers will foster Miss June B, a 5-year-old from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society. As a way to wrap up National Volunteer Week, some White Rock residents are donating their time to share the wonderful volunteer opportunities and find forever homes for furry friends.
The Santa Fe Shelter is housing twice as many dogs as this time last year. The need for volunteers to walk, cuddle, foster or donate treats is on the rise.
June B has a special place in the hearts of more than a dozen local volunteers after having been found left in the middle of the night with a litter of puppies at the shelter. Then she gained some notoriety after she went missing while spending time with her kennel mate in a foster situation. A KRQE story highlights the nine days Junie was out in the Santa Fe National Forest. She lost 5 pounds, but was rescued by some heroes like Michelle Lord.
Junie B hopes to make the rounds this weekend at the Dog Jog and Kite Festivals. She is a bit shy of crowds so local volunteers are willing to meet up near Chamisa Elementary School or Overlook Park for a one-on-one introduction.
Questions or requests can be directed via text or voicemail to 505.695.9139. Find more about June B on the Facebook page for the Santa Fe Shelter and Humane Society.
