C&TS News:
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TS), the nation’s highest, longest and most authentic steam railroad, will open its 2026 season June 9, following a brief delay caused by drought conditions and elevated wildfire concerns.
Recently named the Nation’s Best Scenic Train Ride in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award content, the C&TS runs 64 miles between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado, crossing the Colorado–New Mexico border 11 times while traversing some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the American West.
“A sincere thank you to all our passengers and the communities in Chama and Antonito who have been so patient as we waited for conditions to improve,” said Eric Mason, CEO of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. “We are excited to welcome guests back aboard and hear the opening whistle signal the start of another memorable season.”
In celebration of the USA TODAY 10BEST honor, guests who book by June 7 can receive 25 percent off Coach Class tickets for regular daily excursions (All Aboard, Limited, Express) throughout June, July and August. The offer is valid on new reservations only, excludes special events, and must be redeemed by using promo code USATODAY#1.
“There has never been a better time to experience the Cumbres & Toltec,” Mason added. “Not only are guests visiting the nation’s top-rated scenic railroad, but they can also enjoy the rich history, culture and hospitality of the region.”
The railroad’s Grand Opening Celebration on June 13 will coincide with Chama Western Heritage Days, a free, family-friendly community festival held June 13–14. The celebration features live music, regional vendors, traditional rodeo competitions, dancing and activities for all ages.
While the festival takes place in Chama, railroad officials noted that both gateway communities will welcome visitors throughout the season as passengers travel between Chama and Antonito aboard the historic narrow-gauge railroad.
“The Cumbres & Toltec has always been more than a railroad—it is a partnership between two states and two remarkable communities,” Mason said. “Whether guests begin their journey in Antonito or Chama, they are experiencing a piece of living history that belongs to both Colorado and New Mexico.”
Tickets are available for the first Dark Sky Train departures on June 12 from Chama and June 13 from Antonito. These evening excursions into high-country territory are led by Dark Sky international guides. With minimal light pollution, guests enjoy guided celestial viewing in some of the darkest skies in North America. Introduced last year, these special departures (which are not included in the discount promotion) sold out quickly but tickets remain for the first of the season. Whether you’re a seasoned astrophotographer or simply love the night sky, the Dark Sky Train offers a rare and magical experience — where the rails meet the stars.
