Retirement can mean many different things, but for one retired teacher, it is a chance to teach in a whole new way. White Rock resident Sue Souza retired from Los Alamos Public Schools in 2012 and turned her free time into making items for local craft fairs.
Some simple crafts have evolved into numerous different items, able to provide a gift on a moment’s notice. It also allows for one of a kind, custom-made gifts too.
“I first made outfits for babies including onesie dresses, bibs, burp cloths, and special-order clothing. Then I moved into paper crafts—journals, notepads, list pads, gift tags, and kids’ drawing journals,” Souza said. “Recently I’ve concentrated on football fans offering paracord bracelets in team colors with charms, holiday ornaments, magnets, and banners. This spring I began making purses, wallets, credit card holders, and wristlets.”
Any crafter will tell you there is no guarantee anything will sell at craft fairs, so make what you like and hope someone else will like it enough to buy it. Doing multiple craft fairs and traveling was wearing her out. Then, her daughter suggested an idea.
“My daughter encouraged me to combine the two things I love—teaching and making things,” Souza said. “This has led to my business Designs by Sue offering public craft parties for adults and kids.” Sue could teach others how to make the crafts and allow them to leave with a handmade gift at the end of their time. She can do it as a private party, done as a team building activity, or even a birthday party idea.
She recently held an adult class at Bosque Brewing Co in Las Cruces, while visiting her daughter. Souza said it was a hit; the ladies had a wonderful time and produced unique UV Resin Trinket Dishes. So now the idea has traveled back up the hill to The Fim Festival. The UV Resin Trinket Dish Class will take place from 1:30-3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 17.
The cost is $30 and includes supplies and instructions. There will be food and drinks available for purchase at Film Festival. You can enjoy time with friends while munching on a mini Nothing Bundt Cake and leave with a present ready for giving.
