County’s Draft Short-term Rental Program Available For Public Review And Comment Through June 18, 2023

COUNTY News:

On May 17, Los Alamos County Community Development Department (CDD) hosted a public meeting at White Rock Fire Station 3 to present the latest information about its proposed Short-term Rental (STR) Program.

The purpose of the meeting was for CDD staff and contractor Wilson & Company (Wilson) to meet in person with the community, present the draft STR Program and explain how the public input process has thus far been incorporated. Those in attendance had an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

Short-term rentals, also known as vacation rentals, are now a mainstay in most communities and Los Alamos is no exception. The purpose of the Los Alamos STR program project is to define the market in the County, assess benefits and drawbacks, and incorporate public input.

The ultimate goal of the project is Council adoption of an ordinance that establishes a mechanism for STRs to legally operate in Los Alamos County as part of a program that effectively manages neighborhood impacts.

If you missed the May 17 Public Open House, you may watch the video of the Project Team’s presentation and view the presentation materials on the project website: https://www.livehostvisitlac.org/. The public is also encouraged to review the draft STR Program, also posted on the project website, and submit questions and comments through June 18th to noah.berke@wilsonco.com. This draft STR program is the product of extensive research of national and regional best practices, as well as a community involvement process.

The next draft will incorporate public comments through June 18 to be reviewed by the Project Steering Committee. A final draft will be presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission for recommendation to County Council for adoption via the County’s ordinance process. To learn more about STRs in Los Alamos, go to https://www.livehostvisitlac.org/.
