County: Stay Ahead Of The Cone Zone

COUNTY News:

With an increase in construction projects and community events, Los Alamos County reminds residents and commuters to use the County’s online “Cone Zone” resource to stay informed of road construction, projects, and special events that may impact daily travel. Check out the Cone Zone at www.lacnm.com/conezone.

Year-round, construction is weather-permitting, and schedules may change without notice. The Cone Zone page is updated on an as-needed basis to reflect current conditions and changes for active projects. Not all construction or special events are County-managed, so inclusion of every project or event in the Cone Zone is not guaranteed.

Community members are reminded to put safety first in work zones! Motorists and pedestrians should always use caution, reduce speeds, and follow all posted detours and signage.

Essential services, including mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency response, will continue throughout each project. However, residents and businesses may experience temporary disruptions such as construction noise and the presence of large equipment.

Give a Shift: Rethink Your Commute!

In addition to planning ahead with the Cone Zone, we encourage you to “Give a Shift” and consider alternative transportation options. Rethinking your commute is one of the simplest ways to make a real impact on the climate. Choosing to carpool, bike, walk, or use public transit, even a few days a week, helps reduce emissions, saves money on fuel and vehicle wear, decreases traffic congestion, and improves personal health and well-being.

  • Carpool with coworkers, friends, or family members to reduce the number of vehicles on the road, lower fuel costs, and help ease parking demand.
  • Riding public transportation makes commuting easy and sustainable. Atomic City Transit provides local routes and real-time tracking, while regional services like New Mexico Park & Ride and the North Central Regional Transit District (“Blue Bus”) connect Los Alamos to Española, Pojoaque, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque
  • Biking is a low-cost, efficient commute and exercise in one.
  • Walking the County’s extensive trail network is free, promotes heart and lung health, and eliminates parking concerns.

By using the Cone Zone and exploring alternative commuting options, you can better navigate construction impacts and help our community be more sustainable, safe, and efficient.
