COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County Recreation has announced the first-ever free Annual Soapbox-Style Gravity Race, set to take place along Central Avenue and Canyon Road. This community event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
This is a free event, but pre-registration is required for both the Gravity Race and the Push Race. The last day to register for this event is Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Participants will face off in a double-elimination showdown divided into four age groups: 3-6, 7-11, 12-15, and 17 and up. Racers will kick off the excitement at the top of Central Avenue and Canyon Road, racing downhill toward the finish line at the Aquatic Center parking lot. The Aquatic Center parking lot will be used as parking and the staging area for the event.

- Location: The Los Alamos County Aquatic Center at Central Avenue and Canyon Road
- Age Groups: 3-6, 7-11, 12-15 and 17+
For the safety of all participants, children under 15 must have a parent or guardian present. Parents of children under 6 are encouraged to lend a helping hand as needed. All participants are required to sign a liability waiver when registering for the race.
Push Car Rules:
- Carts must have a minimum of three wheels.
- No propulsion devices other than gravity may be used.
- Helmets are mandatory for all drivers.
- Carts must have functional brakes capable of stopping the vehicle.
- No sharp edges or dangerous points are allowed.
- Use of feet or hands to push the cart is prohibited.
In addition to the Gravity Race, participants can also sign up for the Push Race. The Push Race additionally requires competitors to push their carts uphill before racing back down to the finish line, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
Special Awards:
- The event will feature a prize for the best-themed cart. Be creative and bring your most unique and fun designs to the race.
- A trophy will also be awarded for the fastest time within the age group.
