Roxanne Webster is known by the community as a nurse at Los Alamos Middle School. Now retired, she has always been interested in quilting and has more spare time to dedicate to a hobby many find to be a life passion. This year, time and dedication has garnered Webster her second Grand Champion win in the Los Alamos County Fair. Her entry along with daughter Jenny, Carnival Flower.

“My dad’s mom was a quilter, so all the beds in her house and my parent’s house had hand quilted quilts,” Webster said. “Sometime in my early teens, I asked her to teach me to quilt.” The first pattern she undertook was a spiderweb designed by her grandmother who drew it by hand for her. Once college was done, many quilting journeys lie ahead for her.

While Webster has been involved in entering quilts for years, she’s lost track of when she first began. This year her handiwork bloomed again after she chose the design and fabrics. Then, daughter Jenny did the piecing, and mom quilted the design by Judy Neimeyer.

The Carnival Flower has been dropped off and the judging took place just last week. The results are top secret but will be released this Thursday. The New Mexico State Fair opens on Thursday, Sept. 4, and continues through Sept. 14.
