The Los Alamos County Council is wrapping up its search for a new county attorney. The list of candidates was narrowed to four individuals last week – all with top notch qualifications and many combined years of legal, municipal and county government experience. The candidates include Charles Rennick of Santa Fe, Stephen Thies of Alamagordo, Kenneth Tager of Rio Rancho and Joseph Alvin Leaphart of Statesboro, Ga.
The candidates will be in Los Alamos Oct. 6 and Oct. 7.

On Oct. 6, the candidates will tour Los Alamos and White Rock. Later that day, members of the public are invited to a reception to meet the candidates at 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the Los Alamos County Golf Course. Residents are invited to visit with each candidate and then fill out a comment card with their top choice(s). The cards will be collected and given to the Council as part of their review of all candidates.
On Oct. 7, candidates will have interviews with the Council, a community panel representing residents and businesses, and senior management staff.
The county attorney position was advertised in July, after former County Attorney Rebecca Ehler announced her retirement, and the Council has been actively working to narrow the list of candidates over the last few weeks.
Katie Thwaits is the acting county attorney and will return to her position as assistant county attorney once a new county attorney is hired. The final selection and announcement of the successful candidate is expected later in October.
