Santa Fe City Councilor Joseph Maestas

SANTA FE — Santa Fe City Councilor Joseph Maestas announced July 6 his intent to continue serving as City Councilor to District 2 residents and seek another term in office. He pledged to help restore the public’s trust in City Hall by increasing accountability, reforming the city government’s management, and uniting a divided community.
Councilor Maestas released the following statement:
“Over the last 3.5 years, I have worked hard to champion policies to end bad government financial practices costing the city millions, improve our infrastructure and facilities; and provide additional affordable housing. I am proud to have sponsored legislation to strengthen workers’ rights by enforcing our living wage laws and protecting confidential information of our citizens, immigrants, and their families.
“Although the time was not right for me to run for Mayor, I intend to continue the fight as a District 2 City Councilor, if re-elected, for more investments in infrastructure and sustainability initiatives, as well as the diversification of our economy and sources of water. I will do my part to help heal our divided community by focusing on basic services, listening more and talking less; and championing efforts to unite us as a community. I humbly ask for the continued support of the voters of City Council District 2 and will, again, work hard to earn their votes. Adelante Santa Fe!”
About Councilor Joseph Maestas
Councilor Maestas was born in Santa Fe and grew up in Santa Cruz, NM, in Santa Fe County. His family goes back generations in Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe. Maestas is a registered professional engineer in the State of New Mexico and a business development manager with a private engineering firm, Souder, Miller & Associates. He has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Arizona State University.
He has almost 33 years of engineering experience with the federal government and almost 14 years of experience as a local elected official. Councilor Maestas has held leadership positions at the national, statewide, regional, and community levels. Most notably, Maestas served as the President of the New Mexico Municipal League and President of the Hispanic Local Elected Officials, the Hispanic constituency group of the National League of Cities.
Maestas has served as Chair of the Buckman Direct Diversion Board and Chair of the Santa Fe Solidwaste Management Agency’s Joint Powers Board. He currently serves as Chair of the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Policy Board and Chair of the City’s Bicycle and Trails Advisory Committee. Maestas also serves as the City of Santa Fe’s sole representative on the Northcentral Regional Transit District’s Board of Directors. He also serves as a member of the city’s Public Works and Public Utilities Committees.
