Staff Report
A citizen petition was presented requesting Council pass an ordinance prohibiting retail establishments from distributing single-use plastic carryout bags to their customers and mandating a $.10 fee on paper bags to be collected and retained by the merchant.
After hearing public comment for and against the ban this evening, Los Alamos County Council voted 4-3 to acknowledge the petition, thank the petitioners for their recommendations and send the issue to the Environmental Sustainability Board for further review.
Council Chair Kristin Henderson, Vice Chair David Izraelevitz, Councilor Susan O’Leary and Councilor Pete Sheehey voted for the measure and Councilors Steven Girrens, James Chrobocinski and Rick Reiss voted against it.
