Staff Report

Los Alamos Deputy Utility Manager Robert Westervelt explained the need for an 8 percent electric rate increase for the remainder of FY-2013, to the County Council at its Dec. 17 meeting.

The need to modernize equipment, much of which is approximately 70 years old, the need for repairs to the San Juan Generating Station and increased departmental costs, such as salary increases were among the reasons cited.

The Council approved the increase (Ordinance 02-237) in a 6-0 vote (Councilor Rick Reiss was not present at the meeting.)

The Department of Public Utilities expects to request an additional increase of 6 percent for the new fiscal year beginning in July, Westervelt said.
