Staff Report

During this evening’s Council work session at the White Rock Fire Station, the Los Alamos County Council is reviewing and tweaking the second draft of the strategic goals document to improve communication with citizens.

This subject was initially raised by Councilor Susan O’Leary and in March 2015, Council voted to improve Council communication with citizens on the topics of strategic goals, financial information and performance measures.

At the July 28 work session, the Council agreed with the proposed direction and format brought forward by Councilor Susan O’Leary, who then began working with the County Manager’s office and Public Information Officer Julie Habiger to create drafts of each strategic goal as the first step in the process.

The draft documents were sent to the Council on Sept. 22 with the option to comment by Oct. 6. Comments were then incorporated into a second draft, which is undergoing review and discussion this evening, along with the opportunity for the public to give feedback.

The Council is being asked to approve the work or request additional changes and further review. If approved, the documents will be formatted and uploaded to the County website with the appropriate links to other pages or documents, not later than the end of this year.

The website will then be updated quarterly with progress being made on the goals, and eventually, performance measures will be added and tracked on the webpage. Performance measure suggestions have been included as part of drafts being reviewed by the Council tonight, if the Council wishes to have any further discussion on that topic.
