Corrina Hughes of Los Alamos has been behind the camera lens for 20 years. She has taken numerous pictures of her children but since her family moved to Los Alamos, Hughes said she has loved to photograph landscapes.
Photography offers her freedom of expression and Hughes said she appreciates that photography allows people to consider different points of view. Photography also has garnered Hughes an award. She is this quarter’s winner of the Los Alamos Daily Postcard photo contest.
The photo contest was started when Los Alamos residents Robert and Ann Wells established a fund at the Los Alamos Arts Council. The purpose of the fund is to award a prize of $100 to the photographer who submits the best photo of the quarter published in the Los Alamos Daily Post. Three independent judges select the quarterly winner without knowing the names of the entrants.
Her award winning photograph featuring hollyhocks was published in April in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
“This photo jumped out at us from the rest because of its good composition, color and artistic quality,” contest judge Ken Hanson said. “We were also impressed with the way the photographer used backlighting to enhance its beauty.”
“I’m surprised and I appreciate it,” Hughes said.
She explained she took that picture in her garden, adding it has taken her four years to grow the flowers.
Los Alamos Arts Council Executive Director Patrick Neher commented he was happy the arts council could participate in the contest.
“We appreciate Robert Wells’ support of the arts in Los Alamos through photography and allowing the arts council to be the conduit is great,” he said.
Looking at all of this quarter’s submissions, Hanson said the judges were pleased with what they saw.
“This group of photos overall seems to be an improvement over earlier batches,” Hanson said. “The quality of the photos submitted to LADP appears to be improving.”
