WASHINGTON, D.C. — Corey Hinderstein was sworn in Dec. 6, as the Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN) of the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA).
Confirmed by the U.S. Senate Nov. 30, 2021, she now leads NNSA’s efforts to help the U.S. Government prevent, counter and respond to global nuclear security threats. She was sworn in by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.
“Corey is widely recognized for her expertise and leadership on nuclear security, I could not think of anybody better equipped to lead that first line of defense,” Secretary Granholm said. “She and her team at NNSA will help keep our nation—and our world—safe from nuclear threats by strengthening international partnerships and advancing next-generation ideas and technologies.”
“Corey Hinderstein will help build stronger international partnerships and bring new ideas and technologies to our nonproliferation work,” said Jill Hruby, DOE Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and NNSA Administrator. “She will lead our efforts to secure and reduce worldwide stocks of nuclear material, strengthen global arms control, and reduce the threat posed by nuclear weapons programs of concern. She brings with her a breadth of knowledge and we welcome her back to NNSA.”

Hinderstein has more than two decades of experience with the policy and proliferation implications of the nuclear fuel cycle, arms control, and nonproliferation verification. Most recently, she served as vice president of international fuel cycle strategies at the Nuclear Threat Initiative. From 2015 to 2017 she was senior coordinator of nuclear security and nonproliferation policy affairs at NNSA, participating in diplomatic efforts to restrict Iran’s nuclear program and in planning for the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
