I’m sorry I can’t be with you today, and I want to thank everyone for coming to celebrate 25 years of the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization. Today is the first day of Older Americans Month, and as we recognize the work done by staff and community members over the last 25 years to bring us where we are today.

I also want to acknowledge how hard the last three years have been. We went through a once in a lifetime pandemic, and we came out stronger, but changed. There are people we love who aren’t with us anymore, and as we come together in person, we remember the individuals we lost.

Through difficult times senior centers worked like never before to continue providing services to their communities. In a short period of time, they were able to pivot and figure out how to get vital services to the people who so desperately needed them. Drive thru vaccinations, grab and go lunches, grocery shopping, prescriptions and medical equipment delivered to seniors at home: senior center employees and volunteers made it happen. We recognize your hard work and dedication, and we owe you a debt of gratitude. On behalf of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and myself, thank you.

The Betty Ehart and White Rock Senior Centers provide an example of how we can serve seniors in our community. They offer meals, transportation, fitness classes, volunteer opportunities- even a day out program offering a safe place for seniors to go during the day. I love to see what can happen when we work together.

Collaboration between state and county governments, collaboration between staff, volunteers, and community members: by working together we lift each other up.

Finally, I want to recognize a person who has been instrumental in making the senior center a shining star in this community. Bernadette Lauritzen, we thank you for your service. None of this would have been possible without you, and we wish you all the best as you begin the next chapter. Thank you, and congratulations!
