The public is welcome to attend any of the Public Works weekly project meetings; contact the Public Works Department at 505.662.8150 for meeting information.

Children are attracted by activity and heavy equipment. For safety reasons, please keep children away from the construction area since they cannot always be seen by workers concentrating on their jobs.

Public Works Projects:

Canyon Rim Trail

Construction on the west leg of Canyon Rim Trail continues. The trail remains closed to pedestrians west of Fire Station 6. Crews continue to work on both canyon edges and south of DP Road. Concrete crews will continue forming the ADA ramps and placing concrete on DP Road.

Central Avenue Phase 2 Improvements Project

Crews will continue working daily through the weekend. Concrete work and road prep of the westbound lanes on Central Avenue between 15th and Knecht Street is ongoing and will continue through next week, to prepare for paving. Central Avenue is open to eastbound traffic between 15th and Knecht Street, westbound traffic is detoured at Knecht Street through Trinity Drive. Access to local businesses along Central Avenue is open and accessible.

Message boards are positioned through town to provide additional information. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to follow detours, reduce speed, and use caution within the work zone.

County and Contractor personnel are available to answer questions regarding the Central Avenue Project, 10-11 a.m. every Monday in Room 200 of the County Municipal Building at 1000 Central Ave.

Western Area Phase 4 Improvements Project

Construction crews continue making progress with road work on 37th Street, 38th Street, 39th Street and Ridgeway Drive. The contractor continues with clean up and landscaping next week. Traffic detours to and from Orange Street are in place.

Construction crews will continue utility work and will begin pouring concrete curb and gutter next week on the 40th Street and 41st Street Loop.

Utility work on the 45th Street/41st Street Loop continues.

Residents are required to remove all vehicles on the roadway and find alternate parking during work hours. Access to residences as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained.

Range Road – Bus Turn-Around Construction Project

Public Works crews will begin working next week on a new bus turn-around on Range Road to support transit service to Ponderosa Estates. The turn-around will be constructed just north of the intersection with Aspen Drive. The work will primarily be limited to the east shoulder of Range Road, however, motorists and pedestrians should watch for increased heavy equipment operating in the area. The work is anticipated to last approximately one month, weather permitting.

Utilities Projects:

Arizona Avenue/Woodland – Non-potable Water Line and Valve

Excavation will begin Monday. Traffic will be hindered on Arizona Avenue near Woodland, but the road will remain open. Bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians should use caution in this area, or use planned alternate routes.

San Ildefonso Road – Natural Gas, Electric and Fiber Optic Project

Crews will be purging an existing segment of new natural gas pipeline on Monday and Tuesday before connecting the newly installed line. The work will be performed behind the north curb on San Ildefonso Road between Hawk Drive and North Mesa Road. “Purging” is necessary to safely release to the atmosphere any remaining natural gas from an existing section of pipeline. This is done so that workers can connect new facilities to it, under strict federal regulatory requirements. During the purging operations, neighbors may smell natural gas and hear loud noises usually associated with the controlled release of gas from the pipe. Vehicle traffic may be interrupted on San Ildefonso Road for short periods of time to minimize any potential sources of ignition. The procedure is a conventional one, and DPU crews will be on site to monitor the operation at all times.

North Mesa Drive – Power Pole and Re-conductor Replacements

DPU’s contractor will replace older power poles and re-conductors on North Mesa Drive between the stables and Hawk Drive. Crews will be working in the shoulder. Minimal impacts to traffic.
