The projects listed in this section are being managed by County Public Works staff through contractors. For more information, email lacpw@lacnm.us, call 505.662.8150, or visit the “Projects/Public Works” link at www.losalamosnm.us.

Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass

The current highway detour will be shifted to the north side of NM502 allowing the contractor to work on the south side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and retaining walls. Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100 ft. section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South. Utility work will continue on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St. Residents will continue receiving landscaping remediation around the newly installed water cans and sidewalks. Preparation of paving of portions of Capulin Road, Alamo Road and Tsankawi Street will commence next week.

Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around work zones.

Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

The bike lane along Canyon Road adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving. Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft. The sidewalk is open from the Nature Center to the back drive of the Aquatic Center. From there, pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence.

The public also is reminded that the “back driveway” to the Aquatic Center is closed to the public due to construction. Do not use this area to access the trail. Use the trail entrance at the Nature Center to then travel behind the Aquatic Center.

Non-County Projects:

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.

Los Alamos Canyon (Omega) Bridge Repairs (LANL):

Traffic on the Omega Bridge has moved to the east side of the bridge. The crew will work this Saturday on the bridge’s west side. Crews are repairing, replacing, and repainting the railings. Some work will continue during working hours.

The pedestrian access still isn’t available during working hours. Access will open back up at the end of the workday.  Work is expected to be completed by mid-October.

To avoid congestion and delays, consider using Atomic City Transit as a bus option to cross the bridge. Check out the Route 1 (downtown circulator bus) schedule here.

Motorists are reminded to slow down in the construction area; the speed limit is 15 mph. Allow extra time for your commute during peak travel times in the morning and evening.

Tunnel Work Under Diamond Drive (LANL):

The pedestrian detour for Diamond Drive has changed. The improvements to the tunnel will make crossing Diamond safer and keep traffic moving.

New ramps and stairs will increase accessibility. Improvements include removing the old tunnel, adding a new tunnel that will improve crossing underneath the street, accessibility, and lighting, and allow for easier cleaning of the tunnel. Once completed, traffic on Diamond will move more efficiently as pedestrians will cross underground.

Diamond Detour Reminders (LANL):

Be sure to slow down while driving on the detour routes. Access to Pajarito Road is available via a detour through Bikini Rd. Access to buildings on the west side of Diamond Drive remains the same.

On the east side, parking lots can be accessed near Eniwetok. Parking areas near Grable Road also remain open. For access to Utilities and the steam plant, use Grable Road. TA-03 parking lots aren’t affected.

DP Road (Work related to Canyon Walk Apartments and The Bluffs – Bethel Development)

Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Road Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

The majority of the roadway construction activities have now been completed. Next week, work will include construction of remaining sidewalk sections, and clean up and grading along the sides of the roadway. These activities will impact DP Rd from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway periodically restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagger. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, only during hours of construction.

The contractor work on DP Road is related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway. All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are now expected to be completed by the middle of October.
