Public Works Projects:

The projects listed in this section are being managed by Los Alamos County Public Works staff through contractors. 33rd / 34th Street Road and Utility Improvements – Closures for Paving Operations

The intersection of 33rd Street and Villa Street will be fully closed for paving operations on June 26th and June 29th.  Residents will need to take the alternate route through 32nd Street, then Walnut Street and back to Villa Street through the 33rd/34th loop. The closure will take place on 33rd Street from Walnut Street to approximately 500 feet south of the intersection with Villa Street. Villa Street will be closed from the intersection of 34th Street. (See Map Below)

33rd Street and 34th Street Loop will be closed to through traffic for paving operations on June 27th and 28th. Resident access will be maintained. Others will need to take the alternate route through 33rd Street to 32nd Street then Walnut Street. (See Map Below)

Traffic & Streets Projects:

The projects listed in this section are being managed by Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets Division staff. Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Call Traffic and Streets Manager Daniel Blea with questions at 505.663.8206.

Asphalt Patching on La Paloma

Weather and materials permitting, crews will continue repairing asphalt on La Paloma. Work hours will be 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Crews will stop traffic intermittently as they move through the areas. Please watch for flaggers, crews, and equipment.

Asphalt Patching at the Intersection of Rover Blvd. and Carlsbad Avenue.

Weather and material permitting, crews will repair a sinkhole located at the intersection of Rover Blvd. and Carlsbad Ave. The work will begin Monday, June 26 until completed. Crews will begin at 8 a.m. and finish by 3:30 p.m. daily. There will be a flagging operation in place.

Countywide Right of Way Maintenance Continues in White Rock in Preparation for the 4th of July Event at Overlook Park

Crews will be mowing, cutting weeds, and trimming tree branches obstructing signs in White Rock on Meadow Lane from Rover Blvd. to Overlook Park. There will be minimal obstruction to traffic. Watch for crews and traffic control along the roads and sidewalks.

Arkansas Avenue Sidewalk Closure

Beginning Monday, June 26, Tala Excavation in association with GM Emulsion will be closing the sidewalk on the west side of Arkansas Avenue between Diamond Drive and approximately 41st Street. They will be installing a new entrance to the new subdivision. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured at the NW side intersection of Diamond Drive and Arkansas Ave.

Utilities Projects:

Trenching for Electric Continues on Barranca Mesa

DPU is replacing primary underground electric lines and conduit at the eastern end of Barranca Mesa. The project has been extended to continue through June. 

DPU’s contractor, Paul Parker Construction Company, is excavating between 410 and 500 Navajo Road and south on Totavi Street. Excavation continues across the intersection of Totavi and Navajo and then through to the end of the Totavi cul-de-sac. Residents in the area should expect sidewalk closures and exercise caution while driving through the work zone. All trenching is on one side of the street.  

Non-County Projects:

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.

Longview Drive and Sherwood Blvd in White Rock

Kelly Cable of New Mexico will continue work through July 31, 2023. Crews are installing fiber from the northwest corner of Longview Drive and Sherwood Blvd heading east. The sidewalk closure will remain in place south of the White Rock Branch Library just west of the Longview/ Sherwood intersection. Traffic and pedestrians are asked to watch for equipment, crews and obey all traffic devices. Utility Work and Sidewalk Closure on Camino Redondo & Camino Medio

CableCom, LLC and High 5 Network will be working at 1580 Camino Redondo to bore and trench to replace coaxial cable in 2” conduit. The sidewalk on the west side of Camino Redondo between Cumbres Patio and the southwest corner of Camino Redondo will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will detour to the south side of Camino Redondo. Construction will continue through June 26. Work hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Utility Work on East and West Trinity Drive

Cablecom, LLC in association with Sons Communications, will continue boring along the North side of Trinity Drive beginning at 37th Street and continuing toward West Trinity.

There will be a lane shift into the median, westbound on Trinity Drive.

The sidewalk along the north side of Trinity Drive will be closed from 36th Street to the west side of Trinity Drive. Additionally on Diamond Drive, the northbound lanes and bike lane from the intersection of West Road to Canyon Rd. may be impacted. The contractor, Sons Communications, will be attempting to accommodate the bike lane and stage their equipment on the right side of the northbound lane. Field modifications to the bike lanes may be necessary, including possibly having to share the road with motorists.

Road Closure for Block Party on El Rayo St. July 1, 2023

Residents who live on El Rayo St. will be closing the road for a block party on July 1, 2023. The road closure will begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m.

NNSA – Update as of May 12, 2023:

Construction is Continuing on Improvements to N.M. 4/East Jemez Road Intersection

Due to unforeseen circumstances, completion of Phase 1-B has been extended to mid-June 2023.  During this phase, crews are working on both sides of N.M. 4 as well as on the north shoulder of East Jemez Road.

The following traffic impacts are in place:

  • Crews are working on the embankment, grading within the median area and placing subgrade. They are also placing base course, and plan to pave the median detour areas and mill asphalt for future work later this month.
  • Temporary traffic signals have been installed at the intersection.
  • The speed limit throughout the construction area is reduced to 35 MILES PER HOUR. PLEASE OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT.
  • Access to the parking area for the Bandelier National Monument Tsankawi Unit is COMPLETELY CLOSED as of Monday, April 3, 2023. No alternative access will be provided. A new access is expected to be open in late October 2023.

During construction, all existing travel lanes on N.M. 4 and E. Jemez Road will remain open during peak travel times – 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. Any lane closures will occur during non-peak hours and flaggers will direct traffic. All construction is weather permitting and is subject to change without notice.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down and give themselves additional time to reach their destination. More construction phases will follow, with the project expected to be completed in late 2023.
