Cone Zone: Week Of July 19, 2021

Please slow down and use caution within the construction work zones. Please note the below information is based on a schedule provided by the contractors and may change due to weather or other delays.  

Public Works Projects: 

Canyon Rim Trail Underpass 

Detour is active on N.M. 502, which allows the contractor to work on the north side of the road installing precast concrete boxes and wing walls.

Due to the amount of construction activity that includes trenching, excavation and utility relocation near the trailhead, the trailhead parking lot, and a 100-foot section of the trail near the trailhead will be closed for safety. AUI will be hauling excess material from project site to a site off DP Road. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

ADA improvements along Trinity Drive from Oppenheimer to 39th Street 

Work will continue in the east bound lane at SW corner at the intersection of Trinity Drive at Oppenheimer. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Traffic signs and devices will shift vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic around the work zones.

Access to residents and businesses as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and are advised to stay alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

North Mesa Roadway and Utilities Improvement Project (Casa de Oro)

TLC Plumbing and Utility continues road and utility improvements on Alamo Rd, Capulin Rd, Tsankawi St, Oro Ct, Tsankawi Ct, Cedro Ct, and Big Rock Loop South. The contractor will continue removing and replacing concrete sidewalks, driveway aprons and curb and gutter in selected areas along Capulin Rd, and Alamo Rd. Utility work will continue on Capulin Rd and Tsankawi St including new water and gas main lines. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

Access to residents as well as services such as mail delivery, emergency services, school bus routes, trash and recycling collection will be maintained. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to be alert for construction personnel and equipment and use caution traveling through the work zone.

Leisure Lagoon (addition to the Aquatic Ctr.)

The bike lane along Canyon Road adjacent to the construction area remains closed pending repaving. Bicyclists are encouraged to ride in the driving lane as the material in the bike lane is soft. The sidewalk is also closed in this area, but pedestrians can walk in the bike lane area between the traffic control devices and construction fence. 

NM4 Walking Trail Closed for Repairs

GME Emulsion, LLC will begin trail rehabilitation on NM4 Walking Trail from Sherwood Blvd to Monte Rey Dr. This section of the trail will be closed during the repairs which include mill and overlay, crack sealing, and fog seal. No street closure will occur during the construction.

Work commences on Thursday, July 15 and scheduled for three weeks. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, weather permitting.

Traffic & Streets Division Projects:

Rendija Canyon/Sportsman Club Road Asphalt Repair Work

Crews will be patching asphalt along Rendija Canyon (Sportsman Club Road) all week starting at 8 a.m. and ending by 3 daily. A flagging operation will be in place as needed during this project. 

Non-County Projects:

The following road construction updates are posted below in the interest of keeping residents informed, but are being managed or conducted by others. Please obey all traffic devices and slow down in work zones. 

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge improvements (LANL)

Work continues on the west side. Traffic will be detoured to the bridge’s east side with one lane in each direction. The speed limit will be reduced to 15 mph. Pedestrians and bicyclists can use the sidewalk, but they will need to follow directions from flaggers. Crews will install handrails on the barriers along the sidewalk. Construction crews work from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please be patient and allow extra time as this work will extend the life of the bridge and allow for its continued safe use.

West Road (LANL)

West Road will be fully open this weekend. Repairs from erosion damage and other maintenance work will be completed Friday, July 16.

Intersection of Pajarito and Puye Rds (LANL)

At the intersection of Pajarito and Puye roads near the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF), improvements continue through July 19-23.

West Jemez Rd – Eastbound (LANL)

On eastbound West Jemez, the right turn lane onto Diamond is closed until July 30. Drivers still can turn onto Diamond. Please be patient.

DP Rd (Work related to Canyon Walk Apts and The Bluffs – Bethel Development) Qualcon Builders, LLC – 120 DP Rd Utility Infrastructure Replacement and Roadway Reconstruction

Next week, roadway reconstruction activities continue with roadway grading and paving, and curb & gutter and sidewalk construction. These activities will impact DP Road from Trinity Drive to Fire Station #2 with segments of the roadway restricted to one-lane traffic controlled by a flagged/signaled system. One-lane traffic restrictions will occur only during hours of construction potentially 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

The contractor work in DP Road is related to the new Canyon Walk Apartments (under construction) and The Bluffs senior housing (soon to be constructed). The roadway reconstruction includes installation of curb and gutter, sidewalks and paving of the roadway.  All construction activities related to the reconstruction of DP Road are now expected to be substantially completed by the end of July.
