Flamenco guitar virtuoso Chuscales anchors the concert, along with Matias Rodriguez (guitar), Oscar Gamboa (cajon), and Mina Fajardo (vocals). Argos MacCallum reads Machado’s poetry.
Antonio Machado (1875-1939) is considered one of the finest Spanish poets of the 20th century, along with Federico Garcia Lorca and Miguel Hernandez. An actor, playwright, translator, and teacher, Machado’s early elaborate modernist poetry was transformed by the death of his young wife Leonore into a simple and sublime regard for both humanity and nature. Forced to escape to France by Franco’s army during the Spanish Civil War, Machado died of exposure as well as heartbreak for his beloved Spain.
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and $20 for seniors and students. A link for online tickets may be found at teatroparaguasnm.org. Reservations may be made at 505.424.1601. Teatro Paraguas is at 3205 Calle Marie in Santa Fe.
