The Los Alamos Police Department has confirmed the death of a 16-year-old Los Alamos High School student. He lost his life Monday in White Rock Canyon.
Police explained that as night fell, the location of the youth was too dangerous for first reponders to access. They stationed an officer near the site until morning light today when police officers, Los Alamos Fire Department personnel and Search & Rescue members were able to retrieve the body.
Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Jennifer Guy addressed the tragic event this morning.
“We are deeply sad to hear about the loss of our student. Our sympathies go out to his family and friends,” Superintendent Guy said. “We know that this loss has raised many emotions and concerns for students, staff, and our entire community. We have counselors available at all of our school sites to support students. The school Grief Team will be on campus today and in the coming days to support students and staff. Please reach out to the high school if in need of any support. This is a huge loss for our community.”
The Los Alamos Police Department also encourages anyone experiencing emotional crisis to seek help immediately. New Mexico Crisis Line personnel are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year at 1-855-NMCRISIS (662-7474).
