The Health, Wellness and Resource Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 3, will engage and educate community members of all ages and income levels with local and regional programs, activities and resources.

Champions of Youth Ambitions, (C’YA) is including representatives from Albuquerque and Rio Rancho to provide education and information on disability resources and innovative technology related to tinnitus.

Laura Howard of the Worth Hearing Center and Tinnitus Specialists of New Mexico, has been a clinician there for three years and said she is proud of the care they offer. While she knows some tinnitus issues and treatments can be tricky, she also explains the importance of seeing a provider that is tinnitus-focused and see the variety of options available.

“We are also the only clinic in New Mexico certified to provide the Lenire tinnitus treatment device. It is the first and only FDA approved tinnitus treatment device and has been clinically proven to soothe tinnitus,” Howard said. “Some patients are excellent candidates for this device, and we are excited to offer it.”

The Emergency Communications Center (ECC) of Los Alamos County will also be on hand at the Health, Wellness and Resource Fair. The ECC is often thought of as the one-stop shop that answers the call every hour of the day, every day of the week. The team plans to share information on how the 911 center provides patient care prior to the arrival of police and/or the fire department.

“We are medically licensed and provide instructions for use of CPR, allergic reactions like EpiPen (Epinephrine) use, narcan/naloxone and aspirin, as well as instructions on how to help a choking patient, apply a tourniquet—we can even deliver a baby,” Manager Katherine Stoddard said. “We have a wealth of resources at our fingertips and will help connect the community with organizations, other County departments, and other public safety organizations.”

The 4H Youth Development program will be up for a variety of activities to reach your inner athlete or warm your heart with animals. Angela Prada and her team will have a game of cornhole at the ready or delight your inner child with bunnies and chicks. Additional animals may be on-hand, but you will have to see to enjoy.

Handouts from a variety of community organizations will include four separate locations where food is available to someone that needs a hand up when time gets tough. Activities abound with some grab and go activities that take place throughout the community from youth to seniors, veterans and more.

Nutrition Coach Kate Cleveland hopes to help people cut out the noise, with so much information out there. She wants you to know that fad diets, extreme restrictions, calorie counting without understanding that not all calories are created equal is hard for people to figure out what works best for them.

“We take what you’re doing now and bring it one step closer to where you want to be,” Cleveland said. “Once that becomes habit, we take it one more step. Whether your goal is healthier eating, weight loss, more movement, or a combination of it all, the step-by-step approach means you can create habits that stick for the long haul.”

Cleveland will have a new brochure available about how eating can help to ease arthritis pain. Along with Dr. Elena McAtee, additional resources will be available on their novel support group for weight loss drugs and the road ahead.

C’YA has even made plans for those last-minute gifts for Mother’s Day.

A special small business vendor has been asked to attend that may just have the item needed for mom, grandma or other special woman.

Sue Souza will have a variety of gifts available for the eager shopper, including purses, crossbody bags, and even handy little cell phone pouches for people walking their dogs or hiking the hills.

Free snacks and raffle tickets will be given away throughout the event, all sponsored by the organizations invited to attend.

The HWR Fair takes place in the hall at the United Church of Los Alamos. The hall is at 2525 Canyon Road and while there is no fee to attend, small donations of dog treats, toys and food will be collected for two local shelters.
