Dark Night This Evening At Spirio Field In White Rock

Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Divisions have partnered with the Pajarito Astronomers Club for the Dark Night program. The community is invited to attend the May Dark Night this evening at Spirio Field, weather permitting. The forecast for tonight is mostly clear. Sunset is 8 p.m., and those gathered will begin observing Jupiter about 8:45 p.m., if it is clear to the west.

Anyone with an interest in stargazing and the chance to look through a telescope is invited to come out to Spirio Soccer Field this evening at Overlook Park in White Rock.

The County will turn the lights out for the community and Spirio Field will be available until 11:45 p.m. for astronomy use.

Volunteers from the Pajarito Astronomers Club will begin observing one hour after sunset and stay until as late as 11:30 p.m. if there is continued interest. Attendees may bring their own telescope, set up is at sunset.

This event is free and open to the public and will be held weather permitting. Cancellations will be posted on the Pajarito Astronomers Facebook page.

Red flashlights are recommended for safety and will protect night vision. Temperatures can drop quickly at night, so dress warmly and check the weather before heading over.
