Community Invited To Atomic Fiber Groundbreaking Ceremony May 12

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County has announced that construction of Atomic Fiber—the community broadband network—will begin in May. To celebrate, the County is inviting every community member to a groundbreaking ceremony on May 12. The ceremony begins at 4 p.m. in the parking area behind the White Rock Visitor Center.

This will be a great opportunity to ask questions about the network, learn about the technology behind the network and how it will be built, and meet the different Internet Service Providers.

“This is a major milestone in modernizing the County and poises us to be ready for the future,” County Broadband Manager Jerry Smith said. “We are looking forward to providing world-class internet connections to the community.”

Construction will take place in eight phases over the next three years. As a phase is completed, service will become available. Visit the newly launched Atomic Fiber website to register your interest and track the progress of the different phases.

When construction is coming to your neighborhood, you can expect contractors with Atomic Fiber vests and vehicles to provide notice about a week ahead of schedule. Depending on the existing infrastructure, construction may be attaching fiber cables to existing utility poles or installing underground conduit through microtrenching or directional boring. After installation is complete, a restoration crew will follow to address any issues. All this work will take place in existing County rights-of-way.

Once the network has been laid outside of your home or business, you can sign up to have the connection to Atomic Fiber completed. Express your interest on the Atomic Fiber website. When the crew is ready to connect you, they will reach out via the email you provide.

For additional information about the construction of the network, visit the Atomic Fiber Construction project page on the Los Alamos County website.
