Staff Report

Pajarito Greenhouse has provided the community with well-rooted, hardy plants in pots as well as gardening supplies for 18 years.

There are 234 combinations of plant species and colors packed into the Pajarito Greenhouse’s 3,600 square feet of display area.

“The Santa Fe Greenhouses closed over the winter so we are going to carry as many items as we possibly can to help take up the slack,” owner Dave Fox said.

Pajarito Greenhouse has all of the popular vegetables including peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach and tomatoes. Also, little sweet tomatoes, big tomatoes and very special tomatoes grown by Los Alamos native Luke Gritzo … and all of the herbs anyone could possibly want including four different kinds of basil and five different kinds of culinary sage.

The key thing is they are all selected because they are proven to thrive here … they start growing as soon as they’re put in the ground, Fox said. And he carries lots of perennials that do well at the local altitude and arid climate. There’s also more than 200 kinds of perennials that come back every year, but the petunia is still his top selling plant.

Fox explained that it is not necessary to have a large back yard to get into gardening.

“A lot of people are now gardening in pots,” he said. “We carry the kind of potting soil that won’t turn into a brick in your pot, even in our climate and it’s easily usable for more than one season.”

Pajarito Greenhouse is a department of CB FOX Department Store, but is located at 238 Rio Bravo in the Pajarito Acres section of White Rock.

Greenhouse hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through June 16.
